Reasons for choosing to study in the department
With the gradual implementation of the two-day off on weekends, the emphasis on leisure life and the improvement of tourism quality, leisure activities have become part of the citizens’ life. In response to industry demands, climate change, and an aging population, various safety, health threats, and illnesses that may be associated with leisure activities, it has become indispensable to incorporate health and safety concepts in the tourism and leisure industry.
The Institute of Tourism and Health Science was established in 2001 to train middle and high-level tourism and health professionals. Since the academic year 2015, the Department of Leisure Industry and Health Promotion has been established, and at the same time, the institute and the department have been integrated with a bachelor's degree program, a master's degree program in Tourism and Health Science, and an in-service master's degree program, with the goal of cultivating professionals with expertise in leisure and health. The instruction design provides students with diversified learning areas through the integration of knowledge concepts of leisure travel and health promotion. The department has a well-equipped emergency medical training environment to guide students to obtain EMT-1 (Entry Level Emergency Medical Technician certificate). At the same time, we have a unique professional classroom for simulation of escaping from tour buses. Through the courses and scenario simulations, we create an authentic teaching environment for practice of tourism and leisure safety. We also provide students with learning and professional skills through the professional classrooms of the department, and additional professional knowledge of health exclusive to the department. The students of the Department (Institute) will thus have the correct view of health, global mindset , environmental vision, and life view of service and dedication, and are enriched with various professional knowledge. They are also trained to have the knowledge and skills in health promotion services, competence to handle crisis for leisure and travel health, competence in leisure and recreation planning and communication, civic and ethical literacy, knowledge and skills for leisure and health and global vision, for applying leisure and travel technology to practice and ability to conduct self-directed learning. At the same time, they are also trained to seek various available resources to help customers implement "healthy, safe and high-quality" tourism and leisure behaviors, while following the market trend, and create additional value for the leisure and tourism industry.
